I’ll never forget a conversation I had with a sales rep while running my first company many years ago. It was my job to motivate and inspire her to set, reach and hopefully shatter new sales goals. It was important for our bottom line and important for her sense of professional worth. One night, we were both working late, and she spotted me taking out the trash.
“What are you doing? You’re the CEO!” she said, totally shocked. I had to laugh. Why wouldn’t I take out the trash? It was full!
That memory sticks with me because it encapsulates what leadership really means. Of course I took out the trash, even though that’s not what a CEO typically does. But it needed doing, so I did it. True leadership is about setting an example and doing what you think is right.
